Two by-products, one purpose
When oil is removed from a seed, a solid remains, and that solid is a valuable product in its own right — a protein-rich material sold mostly as animal feed, and for some seeds the larger revenue stream of the whole operation. What it is called and what it contains depend on how the oil was taken out. Mechanical pressing leaves press cake (also called expeller cake or oilcake); solvent extraction leaves meal (extracted meal or oilmeal). They serve the same feed purpose but sit at opposite ends of the oil-and-protein trade-off, which is what this comparison is really about.
Residual oil: fatty cake vs lean meal
The defining difference is how much oil is left in the solid. A press cannot squeeze out all the oil, so press cake retains a fairly high residual — indicatively around 6–18% depending on seed, pressing and whether it was single or double pressed. Solvent extraction, by contrast, dissolves out almost all the oil, leaving meal at roughly 1% oil. This single fact drives everything else: cake is fattier and higher in energy, meal is leaner. Protein and feed value

That toasting is not just solvent removal: for soybean it deactivates anti-nutritional factors (like trypsin inhibitors), genuinely improving the meal's feed value. So solvent meal is a more processed product — desolventized, toasted, and often dried and cooled (a DTDC) — whereas press cake is closer to its raw pressed state. This extra processing is a cost of the solvent route, but it also delivers a consistent, safe, high-protein feed.
Choosing and using each
In practice you do not usually "choose" between them for a single plant — your extraction method decides which you make. A press mill produces cake; a solvent (or pre-press-plus-solvent) plant produces meal. The choice is really the extraction-method decision upstream, with the by-product following from it. For a feed buyer, though, the two are real alternatives: pick the fattier, higher-energy cake or the leaner, higher-protein meal to suit the ration and price. Either way, both turn what could be waste into a saleable co-product, and remembering that revenue is essential when judging the economics of any oil operation — the oil is only half the output.
