Why oil converts differently from water
Edible oil is less dense than water — typically about 0.90–0.93 kg per litre — so a litre of oil weighs less than a kilogram, and weight-to-volume conversions must use the oil's density, not a 1:1 assumption. Density varies slightly by oil and temperature, so this converter lets you set it (default 0.915 kg/L, a common mid value). A worked example
Say you have 1,000 litres of a refined vegetable oil and need the weight for a shipping document. Edible oils are lighter than water, with a density of roughly 0.91–0.92 kg per litre at room temperature. So 1,000 L × ~0.915 kg/L ≈ 915 kg — not 1,000 kg. Going the other way, a 1-tonne (1,000 kg) tank of the same oil holds about 1,000 ÷ 0.915 ≈ 1,093 litres. Why density (and temperature) matter
Weight-to-volume conversion is only as good as the density used, and density is not one fixed number. It varies a little by oil type and falls as the oil warms — oil expands with heat, so a warm tank holds fewer kilograms per litre than a cold one.
