💰 Double-Press Value Calculator

Cake throughput + residual gap + oil price → recovered value
⚠️ Results are indicative for planning and education only — not manufacturer specifications, engineering designs or guarantees. Actual values depend on seed, oil, equipment and conditions. No fabricated numbers.

When a second pass pays

A single press leaves 10–18% oil in the cake; a second pass or multi-stage press reaches ~5–8%. Whether recovering that oil pays depends on how much oil is there (the residual gap), the oil price, and the cost of the extra pass (energy, labour, wear) — plus the fact that a more thoroughly defatted cake has a different feed value. As a rule of thumb, a second pass is more attractive when the cake still holds 12%+ oil and oil prices are healthy relative to cake. This tool estimates the recovered oil and its value; weigh it against your added cost.

What it is for (self-drawn) — Double-press calculator

Reading the result honestly

The estimate is the extra oil recovered and its gross value — it does not subtract the energy, labour and wear cost of the second pass, which you should compare against it. Nor does it value the change in cake worth. For the complete economics, feed the recovered-oil figure into the ROI calculator alongside your operating costs. Multi-stage bar-cage presses build the second pass into one machine, changing the cost side of this comparison.

A worked example

Start with 100 kg of a high-oil seed at, say, ~45% oil content. A single cold press might recover ~60–72% of that oil, leaving a fairly oily cake. A double (or pre-press + press) pass lifts recovery to roughly ~82–90%, dropping residual oil in the cake from perhaps 10–18% down to about 5–8%. On 100 kg of seed that is several extra kilograms of oil recovered — the whole reason double pressing exists. The exact gain depends on your seed, moisture and press setup, so treat the figures as an indicative range, not a guarantee.

Reading the result honestly

The extra oil from a second pass is real, but it is not free: another pass means more energy, more wear on the worm and cage, and more throughput time. The calculator shows the recovery gain; whether it pays depends on your oil price, energy cost and wear-part life. Two seeds at the same oil content can also behave differently, so the residual-oil figures are typical ranges from field practice, not exact predictions. Use the number to decide whether a second pass is worth trying, then confirm on your own line.

FAQ

How do you calculate oil yield from pressing?

Multiply the seed quantity by its oil content and by the press recovery rate (and a moisture factor). A double press recovers more — roughly 82–90% versus 60–72% for a single cold press — leaving less oil in the cake.

Is double pressing oil worth it?

Often yes when the cake still holds 12%+ oil and oil prices are healthy relative to cake value. This tool estimates the extra oil recovered per day; weigh it against the added energy, labour and wear.

How much extra oil does a second pass recover?

Enough to move residual from ~10–18% down to ~5–8%. This calculator multiplies your cake throughput by the residual gap to estimate the extra oil per day.

Does the calculator include the cost of the second pass?

No — it shows the recovered oil and its gross value. Compare that against the extra energy, labour and wear, and the change in cake value, using the ROI calculator.

What is a multi-stage press?

A press that builds multiple pressing stages into one machine, reaching lower residual (~5–8%) in a single continuous operation rather than a separate second pass.
