What “cold” actually means

No single worldwide law defines it; commonly cited practice keeps oil outlet temperature below roughly 60°C, and some certification schemes are stricter. Since a screw press generates friction heat, cold-press operation is a management act: slower speeds, moderate choke, sometimes cooled barrels — not a different physics. If you plan to label under a specific standard (EU markets especially), verify that standard's exact temperature and process wording before printing anything.

The trade, quantified honestly

Raw seed holds its oil tighter than roasted seed, so single-pass cold pressing leaves more behind — cake residuals of 12–18% are normal where a hot line might reach 6–10% over multiple stages. The compensation is price: cold-pressed sesame, flax, coconut (virgin) and specialty nut oils sell at meaningful premiums in health-focused retail. The business question is therefore not "which yields more" (hot does) but "is my market paying for the difference" — our chooser and calculators walk through exactly that.

A practical pattern many mills adopt: run both from one screw press — cold-prep batches for bottled premium, roasted batches for bulk — switching by preparation rather than machine.

Which oils are actually sold as cold-pressed — and why

Cold pressing is a market position as much as a process, and it concentrates in oils whose native flavor, color or perceived health value command a premium: virgin coconut, extra-virgin-style sesame, flaxseed (linseed) for its delicate character, and premium sunflower and nut oils aimed at health-focused retail. For these products, the lower yield of cold pressing is not a defect but the price of a differentiated good that sells well above bulk oil. Conversely, oils destined for refining and neutral commodity sale are rarely cold-pressed — refining would strip the very characteristics cold pressing preserves, so the yield sacrifice buys nothing. The decision to cold-press is therefore downstream of the marketing decision: press cold when, and only when, a buyer is paying for what cold pressing keeps in the oil.

Running one screw press for both cold and hot batches

Many small and mid-size mills do not choose cold or hot pressing — they run both from a single screw press by changing preparation and operating settings rather than machines. Cold batches skip roasting, feed raw or only gently warmed seed, and run at settings that keep outlet oil temperature low; hot batches roast the seed first and press for maximum yield. This flexibility lets a mill serve a premium bottled line and a bulk line from the same asset, allocating seed to whichever market is paying best that week. The main disciplines are keeping the two product streams cleanly separated and holding the cold-press temperature ceiling honestly — if the label says cold-pressed, the outlet temperature has to actually stay within whatever the target standard requires.

FAQ

Is cold-pressed oil healthier?

It retains more heat-sensitive compounds, which is the basis of its positioning. Commercial value depends entirely on whether your buyers pay for that.

Can any screw press cold-press?

Most can, if operated for it: slower speed, managed feed, temperature watched at the outlet. Purpose-built cold presses make the window easier to hold.

Why is my cold-pressed yield so low?

That is the deal — raw seed releases less oil. Check moisture (7–9%) and press condition, but do not expect hot-press numbers.

Do I need certification to say cold-pressed?
